Historical classifications are estimates reconstructed using Dossier Explorer’s method. Some inputs, including the production split and supporting context, depend on current data. The current classification uses the full current census response.
How the political classification is calculated
This is Dossier Explorer’s custom classification of the nation’s game statistics. It is separate from the official NationStates government category.
Economic axis: state ownership is left; private industry and the black market are right. The production split supplies the structural lean, with Economic Freedom and Economy blended into the result. High tax and high welfare percentile intensity shift it left; low values shift it right.
Authority axis: Y = Civil Rights + Political Freedom − 100 − 0.6 × (Government Size − 50), bounded to −100…+100. Negative is authoritarian (top); positive is libertarian (bottom).
Ideology: the original 60 reference labels are compared using the economic and authority coordinates, traditionalism, and radicality. Traditionalism has a distance weight of 0.6 and radicality 0.45. Mandatory census requirements exclude incompatible labels; supporting evidence resolves near ties. Social progressiveness is the mean of Civil Rights and Political Freedom.
History: recorded census values are grouped by UTC month, carrying earlier available scores forward where necessary. The original reconstruction and fallback rules are retained. Historical labels may change when today’s supporting inputs change; they are not immutable historical records. Missing archives cannot be recreated.
